International Year of Astronomy 2009


On this page we list SAO related activities that are occuring during IYA 2009.

  • 26 January: SAO student John Gianforte of Blue Sky Observatory will give a lecture "In the Footsteps of the Master ..." at U. New Hampshire on January 26, 2009 at 4pm at DeMeritt Hall rm 240. For details click here

  • 11 February: Dr Sarah Maddison will be presenting a lecture on planet formation and extrasolar planets to the Astronomical Society of Victoria. Public welcome at 8pm. National Herbarium, Birdwood Ave., Melbourne.

  • February to November, the Centre for Astrophysics & Supercomputing will be presenting free monthly public lectures at the Hawthorn campus of Swinburne University of Technology to celebrate IYA2009.
    The SAO instructors involved in April and June are:
    • Wed. 16 April: Dr Darren Croton (HET605 Instructor) "Building entire Universes in the Swinburne Supercomputer"
    • Wed. 18 June: Dr Glen Mackie (HET602 and HET612 Instructor) "Hidden Galaxies: From Gamma rays to Radio waves"

    SAO is hosting the following lecture as part of the IYA2009 celebrations:
    • Friday 18 September - NOTE DATE CHANGE: Prof. Brian Schmidt (Australian National University) "The Life History of the Universe" will be our guest speaker.

  • 16 May: SAO student John Gianforte of Blue Sky Observatory will give a lecture "The Search for Other Worlds" at U. New Hampshire on May 16, 2009 at 3pm at DeMeritt Hall rm 240. For details click here

  • 25 May: Dr Glen Mackie and Dr Sarah Maddison will be presenting lectures in Coonabarabran for the Three Rivers Foundation Deepest South Texas Stargaze 2009.

  • 22 August: Dr Sarah Maddison will be presenting (another!) lecture on planet formation and extrasolar planets for the Border Stargaze 2009 (hosted by the Astronomical Society of Aulbury Wodonga). The event will be held at the Wymah Valley Retreat.
