English Language Requirement

Students applying to enrol in degree programs at Swinburne must have a level of proficiency in English. Tertiary studies at an institution where English is the language of instruction and assessment may qualify students to meet the English language requirements for study at Swinburne.

If an undergraduate degree is not taught in English you must provide a certified IELTS or TOEFL certificate as evidence. To do this, you must submit one of the following forms of documentation:

  • Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Advanced level certificate at the undergraduate level (EAP 5: UG-65% ); OR,
  • Obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 6.0 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0; OR,
  • a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 550 (with Test of Written English (TWE) score of 5); OR,
  • a TOEFL (Computer-based) minimum score of 213 (with Written Writing score of 5); OR,
  • a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 80 with no band less than 20.
A certified photocopy is a photocopy that has been verified - signed and stamped with an official stamp - by a person in any of the following positions of authority:
  • a minister of religion,
  • a medical doctor,
  • a pharmacist,
  • a member of the police force, or
  • a notary public.

Scanned (digital) certified copies of these documents in PDF format will be accepted via the online application website. Hardcopy versions sent via post will not be accepted.
