Welcome to SAO
Welcome to Swinburne Astronomy Online
Swinburne Astronomy Online (SAO) has been running for more than two decades and was one of the world's first online astronomy programs. Since 1999, students from around the world have enjoyed studying astronomy while interacting with classmates and professional astronomers who teach in the program.
Students join SAO for many reasons. Some wish to deepen their understanding of how the Universe works, while others use the qualification to support their professional goals in education, science communication, or astronomy-related fields. Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds, ages, and stages of life, including many retirees who are pursuing a lifelong passion for astronomy.
SAO offers a flexible suite of study options, from individual units through to postgraduate qualifications comprising 4, 8, or 12 units of study, allowing students to explore astronomy at a level that suits their interests and goals.
A welcome from SAO
The following short video provides an introduction to SAO from Dr Glen Mackie, former long-running Director of the program.
Kind regards and welcome.
