AstroFest 2008

SAO is delighted to announce its second "AstroFest" to be held in Victoria, Australia, from 17-20 October 2008. AstroFest 2008 is open to the entire SAO community - alumni, students and instructors. The weekend's events (5pm Friday 17 October to 5pm Sunday 19 October) will be held in the Yarra Valley, a beautiful wine growing region just north-east of Melbourne. Our location will be The Yarra Valley Conference Centre (YVCC) located at 2164 Melba Hwy, Dixons Creek, which is about 69 km (1h20m drive) north-east of Melbourne.

The YVCC is a retreat style, purpose built venue nestled in the foot hills of the Great Dividing Range and surrounded by vineyards. All guest rooms have en-suites and high-speed broadband internet connection, and each accommodation wing has a common lounge/conference area with a fully equipped kitchen (but note that all meals are provided while on-site!). The YVCC includes a range of recreational activities including a solar heated swimming pool, spa and sauna, synthetic grass tennis court, golf net, jogging trails, volleyball, and bush walks and night time forest walks by appointment. Evening observing sessions at YVCC will occur on the Friday and Saturday nights.

AstroFest will include a series of astronomy lectures, hands-on demonstrations and night observing, as well as a chance for SAO alumni and students to present their own research results.

The October 2008 graduation ceremony follows directly after AstroFest 2008, taking place on Tuesday 21 October.

Registration is now open. For more information go to the AstroFest 2008 website.
