SAO News

New 12 Week Semesters:

Semester 1, 2008, will see some small yet significant changes to the way SAO is run due to changes decreed by the University and our Faculty.

Our usual 14 week SAO semesters will change to a 12 week semester format to come inline with the Swinburne academic calendar. Whilst our newsgroups will now run for 12 weeks instead of 14 weeks, final projects (for non-Major Project Units) will be due two weeks after the semester ends (so effectively in week 14). Newsgroup submissions and CMT2 will be due at the end of week 12.

Students in Major Project Units (HET612, HET615 and HET617) will now have their projects due at the end of Week 12, and HET615 and HET617 posters will be due one week after the semester ends (so effectively in week 13).

HET617 to run in S2 only:

Currently we offer 13 units in S1 and 11 units in S2. To even this out, we would like to move HET617 Computational Astrophycsis to run in S2-only. If this will cause any undue stress on students currently enrolled in SAO, please let us know.

Cosmos - the SAO Encyclopedia of Astronomy:

Cosmos is a unique astronomy reference written by research astronomers. Our encyclopedia entries are for a general audience who wish to know detailed information on a wide range of astronomical topics. Cosmos is an evolving resource, with new entries being added all the time. We hope that Cosmos is of use to both SAO students and alumni. For details, see http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/cosmos/
