Molonglo – Tiled Beams

The movie below shows the tiling of 5 adjacent tied-array beams. These were formed formed by coherently adding the signals from about 36 “modules” together with the required delays to steer each beam to adjacent positions on the sky.

In this data, the is the bright Vela pulsar (J0835-4510) and the positions of the tied array
beams have been kept fixed on the sky so the source transits through the beams. Each
image/frame is equivalent to about 1 second of time and so the source can be seen transiting through each beam in approximately 4 seconds.

The keen eye may notice some side lobes!
