Late-type galaxies include all classes of spiral and irregular galaxies.
The origin of the term ‘late-type’ lies with the original interpretation of the Hubble tuning fork diagram. This assumed that galaxies evolved from the left (early-type ellipticals) to the right (late-type spirals) in a sequence.
