About 50% of the gas in the interstellar medium exists as various types of interstellar gas clouds. The remainder is known as intercloud gas and it is this gas that we find spread over the majority (about 98%) of interstellar space. It has 2 main components: the warm intercloud medium which makes up most of the intercloud gas, dotted with pockets of hot coronal gas, named as such because its temperature is comparable to that of the gas found in the corona of our Sun.
