I am a senior lecturer in the Centre for Astrophysics
and Supercomputing at Swinburne University of Technology. My formal
training is in physics and cosmology, completing my PhD at the University
of Melbourne in 1999. My present-day work is strongly focussed on the
process of scientific visualisation, and high-quality public education and
outreach in the sciences. As a member of the Commonwealth Cosmology
Initiative, I am helping to grow Australia's strengths in computational
cosmology. In 2000, I was a recipient of the Victoria Fellowship,
and I recevied the Swinburne Vice Chancellor's Award for Excellence in
Entrepreneurship in 2005 as a member of the Swinburne Spaceworks team.
I am a very active science communicator, regularly giving talks on astronomy
to school groups and the general public. I teach a course on the
history of astronomy through Swinburne
Astronomy Online.
Since joining the Centre in 1999, I have
taken on numerous roles including: managing the Centre's commercial activities
(1999-2004); course development and teaching for Swinburne Astronomy Online;
and
active participation in public outreach through the AstroTour school program,
New Views of the Universe lectures and occasional appearances on state
and regional radio stations to talk about current astronomical events.
As part of the Swinburne Spaceworks team, I have variously directed, produced,
written and even provided animations for a number of stereoscopic movies
about astronomy that are shown throughout Australia and overseas.
I coordinate Swinburne University's Research & Development double degree
program, which enables undergraduate students to undertake original research projects throughout their degree.
