• If it is not already at your site, download the GIMP at -- http://www.gimp.org
  
  
• To install, type gimp
  
  
• Have a ruler ready to calibrate your screen according to instructions.
  
  
• Disk and Buffer Use:
  Set your preferences for swap and temporary directories to a directory that has a lot of space.
  1. Go to a directory with lots of space and "mkdir" appropriate directories. Typically these are
     .gimp-version#
     
     For a workshop ATNF you can use a data directory like
     
     /data/MACHINE_1/gimp/yourname/.gimp
     
     For example, if I am sitting at VIRGO it would be
     
     /data/VIRGO_1/gimp/jenglish/.gimp
     
     
  2. In the GIMP control panel go to the Preferences option and then to the Directories option and edit these to the above directory.
     
     
  3. In the GIMP control panel go to the Preferences option and then to the Environment option and increase your Tile Cache Size to about 3/4 the size of your computer's memory.
     
     
  4. In the GIMP control panel go to the Preferences option and then to the Environment option and increase the levels of Undo to > 10.
