My PhD is part of a bigger project on which I work together with Prof. Michael Murphy. The overall theme of the work is to verify that the fine-structure constant alpha is actually constant even if we measure it in a star that is e.g. 4 kpc away.
My work is closely related to that of Daniel Berke, another Ph.D. candidate at Swinburne. He is developing a method to measure alpha in close solar twins.
I am focused on the detection of far away solar twins. For this we plan on using the HERMES spectrograph which is able to measure the spectra of a large number of stars. We try to find a method to efficiently and precisely identify the solar twins in those samples. These twins can then be used to verify the fine-structure constant.
