The Group warmly welcomes Dr Jarrod Hurley, who is joining us from Monash, via the
American Museum of Natural History, via Cambridge, via Monash! Jarrod works on
stellar dynamics, stellar evolution, and binaries.
The Group sadly bid farewell to James Murray, who has gone off to join the private sector (fool!). We wish James all the best for his future.
The Group welcomes Nico Aunai, a French stagier student visiting for 3 months
from the University of Paris. He will be working with Sarah on grain growth.
Sarah Maddison and Chris Fluke were awarded a $10,000 Swinburne RDGS grant
for a millimetre wavelength gravitational lensing observing project.
The Group is delighted the welcome a playmate for young Sam.
Max Maddison Mills was born 21 May is the happy son of proud
parents Sarah Maddison and David Mills.
The Group welcomes its second PhD student - Mr Paul Kiel.
Paul will be working with James on binary evolution.
The Group welcomes its first PhD student - Ms Annie Hughes!
Annie will be working with Sarah on molecular clouds in the LMC.
The group welcomes Adrian Malec, our latest R&D who will be working with Sarah and James on grain growth.
The group welcomes Kirsten Joy, our latest Summer Vacation Student from ANU who will be working with Sarah over the summer.
The group is extremely pleased to welcome young Samuel James into the world! Sam was born on November 16 and is the happy son of proud parents James Murray and Louise Hartley.
The group welcomes Kimitake Hayasaki from Japan. Kimi has taken up a 3 year postdoctoral fellowship and will be working on accretion disks with James.
The group welcomes two R&D students who will be working with Sarah in semester 2 - Adam Deller (again!), who
will continue his work on debris disks, and Richare Moore who will be working on planetary dynamics.
The group welcomes back Kathy Mason who is visiting the Centre to finish her PhD write-up.
Sarah attended Bioastronomy 2004 in Iceland and presented work on planetary habitability
and finding planets in debris disks.
The Group welcomes Thomas David and Sylvain Garabiol, students from the Ecole Nationale Superieure
de Physics de Grenoble, France, who will be visiting Sarah & James for 3 months.
The Group welcomes Dr Louise Hartley, who will be working with James for
12 weeks on winds from eccentric and warped accretion discs.
The Group welcomes Ms Lettisia George, a third year R&D student who will be
working with Sarah on the planet eating star V838 Mon.
Sarah attended the Planetary Timescales: From Stardust to Continents conference in
Canberra and presented work on predicting the dust distribution in protostellar disks,
as well as presenting Adam's poster on searching for unseen planets in debris disks.
The Group welcome Daniel Price from Cambridge, who is visiting during February
to work with James on adding MHD to SPH.
James was awarded an $18,000 Swinburne RGDS grant to work on winds from eccentric
and warped accretion discs.
The Group (once again!) welcomes Adam Deller, who will be staying on over the summer on a
Summer Vacation Scholarship to
work with Sarah on debris disks.
The Group congratulates James who was married in Scotland.
The Group is sorry to see Dr Jim Morton leave and wish him well with his future projects.
James has been invited to speak at the IAU Colloquia 194 Compact Binaries
in the Galaxy and Beyond in Mexico and presented work on CVs.
The Group is very sad to see Dr Robin Humble leave the country. Robin has been with the group on
and off for the past two years working on dusty-gas disks and planets in disks, as well as
all things parallel N-body+SPH. Robin is retunring to CITA.
The Group welcomes Mr Adam Deller, a fourth year R&D student who will be working with Sarah
on protoplanetary disks during semester 2.
The Group welcomes Dr Jim Morton, who will be doing some postdoctoral research work using
ZEUS to study disks. Jim's background is in fluid dynamics.
Sarah, James & Annie attended the IAU General Assembly in Sydney.
Work on a variety of topics was presented at the various symposia & joint
discussions on building planets with dusty-gas, adding theory to the virtual
observatory, and the history of astronomy in Antarctica.
Hans Zinnecker from Astrophysikalisches Institut Potsdam visited the Group and
gave a talk on a HST/NICMOS search for giant planets around white dwarfs. He also
chatted with Sarah & Annie about their planets in binaries project.
The Group welcomes Dr Jean-François Gonzalez from Ecole Normale Superieure
de Lyon, France, who will be visiting the group for two weeks to work with Laure & James.
The Group welcomes Ms Laure Barriere, a visiting PD student from Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon, France
(co-supervised by James).
Laure will be visiting the group for four weeks and works on a two-phase dusty gas code.
The Group welcomes Ms Kathie Manson, a visiting PhD students from ANU. Kathie will be visiting
for two months from early-January to early-March. Kathie wrote her own SPH and radiative transfer codes and
models CV disks.
The Group welcomes Nilufer Can, a Department of Education Science Fellowship award winner from
Upway Seconday College. Nilufer will be at Swinburne working with Sarah Maddison on some
problems in Solar System dynamics for two weeks in December.
The Group welcomes Katie Dodds-Eden, a Summer Vaction Scholar from ANU. Katie will
be at Swinburne working with the Stars & Planets group for 10 weeks on circumbinary
disk problems.
The Group is delighted to offer a PhD position to Ms Annie Hughes, who will commence
her PhD with the Group later in the year.
James and Sarah were awarded a $20,000 grant through the Victorian Partnership
for Advanced Computing Expertise Program, to pursue their projects "Building
Planets " with Robin Humble.
Welcome to Dr James Murray, joining the Centre and the Group from the University of
Leicester, UK. James is an expert on all things SPH and accretion and has taken up
a position as Senior Lecturer for (at least!) the next 5 years.
Sarah attended the Bioastronomy 2002 IAU Symposium 213 on Hamilton Island
and presented work on building planets with dusty-gas.
Sarah attended the Extrasolar Planets conference in Washington DC
(which James also attened) and presented recent dusty disks simulations.
Robin attended the ASA Annual General Meeting in Mollymook, NSW, and
presented work on building planets with dusty-gas. Annie also attended the
Harely Wood Winter School in Batemans Bay, NSW.
Welcome to Dr Robin Humble, who joins the Centre and the Group from CITA, University of
Toronoto, Canada. Robin is an expert on all things SPH, N-body, parallel and HPC and
has taken up an 8 month (at least!) postdoctoral position.
Welcome to Ms Annie Hughes, who joins the Group as a part-time Research Assistant,
working on problems of circumbinary disk dynamics and making synthetic near-IR maps
of CB disks to compare with observations.
Sarah was awarded 35,000 CPU hours on the supercomputing time on the APAC National
Facility Machine to work with Robin on the "Building Planets with Astrophysical Dusty-Gas"
project.
Sarah was awarded a $20,000 grant through the Victorian Partnership for Advanced
Computing Expertise Program, to work on the "Building Planets with Astrophysical
Dusty-Gas" with Robin Humble.
