Dr. Thibault Garel

My research interests focus on galaxy formation and evolution. I have been using and developing semi-analytic models based on large cosmological simulations to investigate the properties of galaxies. Such models provide outputs which can easily be compared to real data so as to test physical recipes, and interpret/constrain relevant statistical quantities (e.g luminosity, mass functions) and their evolution with redshift.

A large part of my research is dedicated to the study of the high redshift Lyman-Alpha Emitters, which allow us to probe the first ages of galaxies. The properties of these objects, and their role in the scenario of hierarchical galaxy formation are still poorly understood so far. To improve our knowledge of these galaxies and to help interpret observations, accurate treatment of the radiative transfer of the Lyman-alpha line in the gas is required. To this aim, I use numerical codes to address the issue of Lyman-alpha line transfer in both semi-analytic models and hydrodynamical simulations.

In the context of the large forthcoming radio surveys (e.g with ASKAP), I also intend to develop models in order to study the evolution of the abundance of neutral gas in galaxies in the low-redshift Universe.
