Dr. Katinka Gereb

My scientific interest is in studying the HI gas properties of galaxies and AGN. Currently I am involved in a study of extremely HI rich galaxies using radio observations with the GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey (GASS) and Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey. This project can improve our understanding of how galaxies accrete and maintain their cold gas content. One can also study the morphological and structural properties of galaxies by tracing the fingerprint of cold gas accretion in the form of faint stellar structures at the outskirts of such extremely HI rich systems.

During my PhD I’ve been using spectral stacking techniques to study the role that HI gas plays in the life of galaxies and AGN. In particular, I’ve been studying the connection between HI gas and the star formation processes present in different types of galaxies (blue/red, AGN/inactive, etc.). Furthermore, an extensive part of my research involved HI absorption observations of radio galaxies, focusing on the interplay between AGN and HI gas in the central region of galaxies.
