Access to the Swinburne Library

While some of this information may still be relevant, this page has been superceded by the information available here.

Library Resources

As an SAO student, you have access to a large number of online databases and electronic journals that the Swinburne Library subscribes to. If you live locally, you can also visit the Swinburne library and borrow books. For information about obtaining a library card, see Collect your ID card.

Ebooks

To access ebooks, search the library catalogue using keywords and refine your results to books from the panel on the left. Click Available to link to the ebook.

To access the online journals search A-Z journals. If the journal you are looking for is not available online through the library, contact your Liaison librarian, Kim Hodgman, at: khodgman@swin.edu.au.

Astronomy subject guide

You should also check the astronomy subject guide for links to key journals, databases, encyclopaedias and ebooks. To access the guide, go to the Blackboard welcome (home) page, click the [top, right] link Library, then Subject guides. Next, click Science, then Astronomy.

Accessing to Professional Journals

The quickest way to search for journal articles is via the ADS abstract server, which gives direct links to articles in the major professional astronomy and astrophysics journals.

Once you have your Swinburne/SIMS password, you should be able to access many more publications via the OpenAthens authentication system accessed within NASA's ADS. A FAQ page sits above the Astronomy guide in Canvas. It includes basic navigation informatiom that new students will want to know. If you have library access problems, contact servicedesk@swin.edu.au You can also try phoning the IT Service Desk on +61 3 9214 5000 (option 5) during Melbourne Australia office hours.
