Installation Instructions - Macs

1. Macintosh OS Installation

The CD has been optimised for PC users, however, users with Macintosh computers will be able to access all of the material but must use a different method for installation and viewing. Please take particular note of the section on changing MIME types for your browser and viewing movies.

1.1 MAC INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive and wait for its icon to appear on the desktop.
To run the presentations on the CD you will need to have Netscape Navigator or Netscape Communicator and the Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer installed on your hard drive.
The installer for the Macintosh version of Netscape Communicator 4.6 (COMM46.BIN) is in the NETSCAPE folder on the CD. Most Macintoshes come with Netscape or Internet Explorer pre-installed, but if you have an earlier version it would be wise to upgrade it by running the Netscape installer found on the CD. To install this version of Communicator, copy the file COMM46.BIN to your hard disk and double click on it.
Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 98 is located in a folder within the PPVIEW folder, it is called MACPPV.HQX. To install this version of the PowerPoint Viewer, copy the file MACPPV.HQX to your hard disk and use BinHex (or an equivalent) to extract the viewer. It will be probably be necessary to maximise the memory allocated to the PowerPoint Viewer. Earlier versions of the Viewer will not read the presentations satisfactorily.

1.2 SETTING THE MIME TYPES ON THE NETSCAPE BROWSERS
In order for Netscape to automatically launch the PowerPoint Viewer whenever you click on a PowerPoint (PPT) file it may be necessary to add a MIME type.
1. In NetScape, choose the preferences from the "Edit" menu.
2. In the "Navigator" category, choose 'Applcations".
3. Click the "New" button.
4. The Description should be "PowerPoint", the MIME type and suffixes should be "PPT".
5. The "Handled by" option should be set to 'Application", click on the "Choose" button and locate the PowerPoint Viewer on your hard disk.
6. Choose the "Save" button and quit from NetScape will make the changes permanent.

1.3 STARTING CLEAR SKIES!
Find the INDEX.HTM file in the CONTENT folder in the CD-ROM. and view it using Netscape. Clicking on "Contents" will bring up an Index of the Activities (PowerPoint presentations) on the CD-ROM.
If you click on an activity link and the PowerPoint Viewer doesn't load the file please review the instructions in section 1.2, or see the WWW site (/sao/) for more information.

1.4 VIEWING PRESENTATIONS ON A MAC
To view an activity (PowerPoint presentation) click on the Activity of interest in the Index of Contents (being viewed in Netscape).
If the presentation does not open, locate the Powerpoint file on the CD-ROM and drag the file (e.g. ESMM03A1.PPT) onto the PowerPoint Viewer (or an alias of it).
If you hold down the Control key while pressing the mouse button during a presentation, you will see a popup menu which may help with navigation.

1.5 VIEWING MOVIES ON A MAC
On a Macintosh the movies may not automatically load from the PowerPoint presentations. You will have to exit from the PowerPoint Viewer and use QuickTime, Netscape, or another application capable of running QuickTime movies.
To view a movie, first take note of the link displayed in the presentation (e.g. EGCMOVS/HSTPOINT.MOV). Then find this movie on the CD and drag-and-drop it onto the application you have chosen to play QuickTime movies.
Alternatively, if you have QuickTime installed, you can simply double-click the file.
If you have a slower computer and the movie does not run smoothly, you may copy it to your hard drive first.

2. Trouble Shooting

Symptom: 'I click on links to Activities but they fail.'
(Solution 1) Ensure that the correct CD-ROM is in the drive.
(Solution 2) Ensure that you have the PowerPoint viewer installed and redo steps 1 and 2 above.
(Solution 3) Manually find the file on the CDROM (eg: CONTENT/ESMM02A1.PPT). Load the file into the PowerPoint Viewer by double-clicking it (you may also drag it onto the PowerPoint Viewer icon).
