Example 2: Halo merger tree from the Millennium Simulation

A halo merger tree based on data from the Millennium Simulation (Springel et al. 2005; De Lucia & Blaizot 2007) showing the formation of a dark matter halo over time. The (heat) colour map indicates the time-ordering in which each sub-structure became bound to the final halo (red equals earliest times, white equals latest times). 3-d spatial locations correspond to (x,y,z) coordinates within the simulation box. Splats, or textured billboards, are used to represent each point, with sizes scaled by the virial radius of the progenitor halos. The splats rotate to remain directed towards the viewer regardless of the camera orientation.
